PALOS VERDES ESTATES • DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
an easy countdown to safety
THE CHALLENGE IS ON!
Welcome to the Challenge! Seven weeks of learning quick and easy safety preparation. Our challenges ran from March 15–April 30, 2021. If you missed them, no worries––you can start your challenge anytime. Go at your own pace. Just take the challenges a week at a time, or do them all at once. The goal is to get you and your family disaster-ready.
We want to hear your successes, answer your questions and support you during your challenge. Share your journey to preparedness with us at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Your normal route out of the City is closed due to a downed tree caused by a small brush fire. Do you know an alternate route?
Identify and travel at least two alternate routes from your house to a point outside PVE. Discuss your findings with your family.
Locate your neighborhood and the main arteries out of Palos Verdes Estates.

A small brush fire is threatening PVE. You have 1 hour to evacuate your home. Do you know what items you should take?
Make a checklist with your family so everyone knows what essentials are needed for a quick evacuation. Put the list in an easy to find location for quick reference.
READY • SET • GO!
A mandatory evacuation of your neighborhood is ordered, and members of your household are at work & at school. What is your reunification plan?
Choose a location outside of PVE where family members can safely gather. Practice meeting there.
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
WHAT’S THAT NUMBER?
The power is out in your neighborhood. What communication devices will work to call for help or get in touch with family? (cell phone, landline, internet, VoIP, cable)
Identify how you would communicate an emergency to the police, fire dept., family member or friend (who is not in the same household) during a power outage. Share with your family.
Know your key phone numbers, plus consolidate your family’s important information in one document. Visit Red Cross Family Disaster Plan for help devising a family disaster plan.
Your vehicles are parked in your garage or gated driveway and the power goes out. How will you open your garage door or gate to get your vehicles out if you have to leave?
CHALLENGE: Can your garage door or gated driveway be opened manually? Test it out with your family. Create an instruction card and put it in a central location for use in an emergency.
WE GOTTA GET OUT OF THIS PLACE
DO ONE THING: FIND WATER
You need to shelter in place for 5 days. What will your family and your pets use for drinking water and NON-drinking water?
CHALLENGE: Make sure your family members know how to access water sources in your home. Do you have 2 gallons per person, per day for 5 days? Remember to have a water supply for your pets.
Visit the Plan & Prepare page for valuable information about water supplies.
There’s been an earthquake. For safety reasons you’re directed to turn off your gas because of a possible leak.
Have your family locate the gas meter and the shut off valve. But don’t actually turn the valve off! Only in an emergency should gas be turned off. NEVER turn gas back on. The Gas Company MUST do this.
Visit the Plan & Prepare page for valuable information about having the proper tools on hand and teaching your family how to shut off utilities.
